Summer time fun

Every summer I got to listen to the chimed voices of my kids saying, “I’m bored” and “what can we do” about a week into their break. I have three kids ranging in age from 14 to 21 years now, so they amuse themselves quite well… most of the time. When the were much younger though it was a bit of a task to find something, we could all do and enjoy together. We all loved going to the movies, so I thought why not start having movie nights under the stars in our backyard! A summer tradition was born. We have even gone so far as to take a flat screen camping to have movie night at the campground. We were quite the hit with all the other kids camping too. I still love movies and find them a great escape from everyday and I watch movies even if they are (poorly) dubbed or with subtitles. If it’s a good story I want to watch it. Maybe this is the summer you start a movie under the star’s tradition of your own. Here are some of the movies & movie series the kids and I enjoy while sitting under the stars.

The buzzz around the building

As spring winds down and summer approaches, for many there is a last rush to finish spring clean-up duties. The same is true for our beekeeping teams across Oxford Properties locations, as they busily finish the delicate task of splitting hives. Splitting hives is an arduous chore that takes place in spring to divide hives that are becoming slightly crowded. In the same way that a human family with many children might consider moving out of a small house, a bee colony that is filling their hive space may consider swarming and moving on to somewhere more suitable for their colony size. Our beekeepers account for this by removing part of the hive to create a new colony. The old hive gets to continue its work, while the new one gets to build a new hive with some stellar new real estate and a new queen. One crowded hive will morph into two working hives. More hives will eventually mean more honey—and that makes life even sweeter! The photograph below shows our bee yard where hives are being split.

Discover the World of Bees
with Angela Glanzmann and Andie Langemeyer

As many of you know, Oxford offices across Canada have their own beehives along with beekeepers that help them thrive. The hives are managed by our partners Alvéole who install and care for beehives in many urban locations in order to educate, reconnect city-dwellers with nature, raise ecological awareness, and help build more sustainable cities.

To mark Earth Day on April 22, we organized a live event led by two of our beekeepers, Angela and Andie. The event included a 30-minute workshop and a live Q&A.
